Types of pumping equipment on agricultural industry

According to the type of operation, pumping systems could be divided into two ways: volumetric or positive displacement pumps, and kinetic or fluid dynamic pumps.

In today’s article, we are going to delve a little deeper into each of these types and what they are used for in the agriculture industry.

About volumetric or positive displacement pumps

Positive displacement pumps use the change in volume of a chamber to generate the absorption and momentum of a given liquid. The liquid is sucked into the body of the pump and a vacuum is created to later be expelled, generating an internal pressure.

Pumps of this type are capable of moving a large volume of liquid constantly.

This type of pumps can be rotary or reciprocating pumps, which, for their part, can be simple or double-acting pumps.

a) Rotary pumps: they are called in this way since they are operated by elements that rotate.

b) Alternative pumps: these are used during a mobilization in a straight line of sliding, in order to make the fluid expand and compress.

Reciprocating pumps can be single or double acting. The former have a kind of cylinder in which a piston must move with constant movement. The suction pipes allow the liquid to flow in the direction requested. On the other hand, double-acting pumps are concerned with two stages: the suction stage and the discharge stage.

A look at kinetic pumps

It is, therefore, fluid dynamic pumps that are also known as “turbopumps”. They are those equipments capable of transmitting energy to the liquids that work, continuously and with the help of a rotor in charge of providing kinetic energy to the fluid. This energy is subsequently converted into pressure.

Kinetic pumps can be divided into: axial or centrifugal pumps.

  1. Axial or turbine pumps: In this type of pumping system, the movement of liquids is regulated by means of a piped propeller, which drives the content. The drive shaft operates parallel to the movement of the flow.
  2. Centrifugal or radial kinetic pumps: They have a component that rotates called “impeller” or “rotor” and a component that is fixed. With the movement of the impellers, a space is created that can hold the fluid and transport it thanks to the pressure.

What are its benefits in using the agriculture industry?

Among other qualities, the pumping systems are highly capable of meeting all kinds of needs linked to the field of agriculture. For example:

  • Distribute and supply irrigation systems.
  • Its use contributes to having better quality fruits.
  • Increase crop productivity.
  • Contribute to the care of the environment.
  • They save investment and labor costs.
